The European Republic : A realistic political project or an utopia ? Tuesday the 25th of October The European Republic is a political project meant to revolutionize the EU as such and to deal with the severe crises the EU is facing (Brexit, refugees, nationalism, debt crisis, Ukraine). Moderator: Nicola Benigni Facebook: The European Republic Link of the Presentation: european-republic-coffee-talk-presentation-presented1.pdf Charter Cities and Governance of Mega-Cities Tuesday the 27th of September We know that firms are established to reduce transaction costs ever since Ronald Coase's landmark paper. But whatabout cities? Are they also subject to the “decreasing abilities of the planner” to allocate resources when they become too big? Moderator: Philip Hanspach Facebook: Charter Cities and Governance of Mega-Cities Link of the Presentation: charter-cities-and-governance-of-mega-cities-v2-1.pdf Ecology and Economics: The Case of Invasive Species Friday the 19th of February This week's Coffee Talk will be moderated by Prof. François Salanié on the interesting intersection of Ecology and Economics. The topics we are going to discuss about include population modelling, cost-benefit analysis and public policy. Moderator: Prof. François Salanié Facebook: TSEconomist Coffee Talk: "Ecology and Economics: The Case of Invasive Species" The Future of Economics Thursday the 14th of January Moderators: Marina Sanchez del Villar and Hussein Bidawi Facebook: TSEconomist Coffee Talk: "The Future of Economics" Free Trade and Development Thursday the 26th of November Many international institutions are suggesting developing countries to liberalize their markets and engage in free trade in order to spur economic growth. However, might not a phase of protectionism be more suitable for developing economies with the aim of prospering in the long run? Some economists such as the South Korean institutional economist Ha-Joon Chang have indeed supported these thoughts. Moderator: Ivan Salles Facebook: TSEconomist Coffee Talk: Free Trade and Development TTIP - The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Thursday the 12th of November This time we will discuss about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is a proposed free trade agreement, specifically intended to break down non-tariff barriers to trade, between the European Union and the United States, that has been negotiated on since 2013. Facebook: TSEconomist Coffee Talk: "TTIP - The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership" Development, Poverty and Consumption Friday the 24th of October This week's Coffee Talk will allow you to discuss some of the central topics of our discipline - alleviating poverty, supporting sustainable development and understanding consumption are some of the key issues of economics. That's why the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2015 was awarded to Angus Deaton "for his analysis of consumption, poverty, and welfare". Facebook: TSEconomist Coffee Talk - Development, Poverty and Consumption Refugee Crisis in Europe - A New Dawn or a Decline of the West? Thursday the 8th of October Currently, Europe is facing the biggest refugee crisis since the second World War: some European countries are receiving thousands of migrants every week, cities are struggling with providing accommodation and food for hundreds of people, and thousands have died in their desperate try to cross the Mediterranean sea, seeking a better future life and escaping war, crime and poverty. A truly constructive and expansive solution for this issue, covering all European countries, has so far not yet been found. Instead, people have been reacting very differently in the face of this ongoing crisis, with some countries closing borders and people trying to create a "Welcoming Culture". On the other hand, the current crisis may as well be a chance for European countries suffering the consequences of demographic change, and may prove a challenge for the European Union to show what extensive cooperation can achieve.
